Baylor Student Wins Car in Unique Contest

April 17, 1997

WACO, Texas -- Ryan Martin, a freshman at Baylor University and a native of Corpus Christi, has won an automobile design contest and with it a 1997 Dodge Neon Sport and will travel to Detroit to meet with designers at the Dodge Neon factory.
Martin entered the nationwide contest which called for contestants to design an exterior paint scheme on a drawing of a Neon. Using a rain forest theme for his design, Martin painted the car in shades ranging from dark purple to light yellow and drew in outlines of trees, mountains and clouds. Martin and 24 other university students from around the country were chosen as finalists in the contest and were sent a model car to paint with their designs.
"I wanted to choose a design that was different from the standard rainbow, so I painted a rain forest," Martin said. "For my design I drew the tops of rain forest trees, clouds and the sky."
"I have always liked art," he added. "This could be a really neat thing for me as far as future job opportunities."
Martin currently is majoring in biology at the university. He is the son of Jack and Lynda Martin of Corpus Christi.
