Rabbi and Historian Will Address Baylor Students about ‘The Church and the Jews’

WACO, Texas (Oct. 9, 2015) –Baylor University’s Honors College will host Rabbi David Dalin, professor of history and politics at Ave Maria University, for “The Church and the Jews” at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, in Memorial Drawing Room.
Dalin is a widely published Jewish scholar and an expert on American Judaism and Jewish-Christian relations. He is the author, co-author or editor of 10 books on American Jewish history and politics and Jewish-Christian relations. Dalin was named the Taube Research Fellow in American History at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and was a visiting fellow at the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University. Dalin now serves on the Advisory Council of the journal “First Things” and as a member of the Academic Advisory Council of the American Jewish Historical Society.
Addressing a pivotal occurrence in Jewish-Christian relations, Dalin will reflect on Pope John XXIII’s historical recognition as one of the 20th Century’s greatest papal friends and supporters of the Jewish people. He will discuss Pope John XXIII’s numerous contributions to the Jewish people, from his role in saving the lives of tens of thousands of Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe while serving as the Vatican’s representative in Turkey during World War II, through his involvement in convening the Second Vatican Council and inspiring the formation of its historic declaration on Jews and Judaism, known as “Nostra Aetate.”
“Our hope is that students will gain a better appreciation for the tensions and possible avenues of communication and dialogue between Jewish and Christian communities,” said Thomas Hibbs, Ph.D., dean of the Honors College at Baylor.
This lecture is free and open to the public. The Memorial Drawing Room is located in Memorial Residence Hall, 1425 S. Seventh St.
