WACO, Texas (Sept. 1, 2015) – Baylor University’s department of modern languages and cultures in the College of Arts & Sciences will give students an opportunity to experience cultures around the world through film with its ninth World Cinema Series beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

“The World Cinema Series is an event sponsored by the department of modern languages and cultures which aims at enriching the cultural conversation within the Baylor community,” said Cristian Bratu, Ph.D., associate professor of French. “The Cinema Series started eight years ago as a cultural complement to our language courses. For the past several years, we have screened movies primarily in the languages taught in our department. This is in line with Baylor’s strategic plan, ‘Pro Futuris,’ which emphasizes the study of languages and cultures. While most of the audience members are language students, this free educational event is open to all members of the Baylor community who wish to broaden their knowledge of other cultures.”

Each film will be shown at 6 p.m. Tuesdays in Bennett Auditorium. All films will be shown with English subtitles unless noted. The schedule is as follows.

Sept. 1 “Red Dog” – Australia

Sept. 8 “Marketa Lazarová” – Czech Republic

Sept. 15 “Si accettano miracoli” (“Miracles Accepted”) – Italy

Sept. 22 “Solovki, la bibliothèque disparue” – France/Russia (This film will not feature English subtitles).

Sept. 29 “Deux hommes dans la ville” (“Two Men in Town”) – France

Oct. 6 “La tête en friche” (“My Afternoons With Marguerite”) – France

Oct. 13 “También la lluvia” (“Even the Rain”) – Spain/Bolivia

Oct. 20 “Smetto quando voglio” (“I Can Quit Whenever I Want”) – Italy
