WACO, Texas (Feb. 20, 2015) – Baylor’s School of Music will welcome one of the world’s most widely celebrated ensembles, the Takács Quartet, and violist Lawrence Power to its Distinguished Artist Series at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, in Roxy Grove Hall.

The quartet was founded in 1975 in Budapest, Hungary, when its members were classmates at the Franz Liszt Academy. It quickly rose to prominence and has since won numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award. Its repertoire consists of contemporary and classic works, focusing on the core quartet works of composers such as Mozart and Schubert. It currently serves as the Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Colorado in Boulder. The quartet previously performed at Baylor University in 2007.

The Takács Quartet consists of Edward Dusinberre on violin, Károly Schranz on violin, Geraldine Walther on viola and András Fejér on cello.

“The group is one of the premier string quartets in the United States,” said Kathy Johnson, assistant to the dean of Baylor’s School of Music. “They’ve performed at Baylor before, and the public had a great response to them. They are also very accessible to the students and will teach a master class after their performance.”
Lawrence Power, one of the most prominent violists today, has performed with some of the world’s greatest orchestras. Throughout his career, he has produced acclaimed recordings of operas and classical compositions, even being nominated for a Gramophone Award. Power has been appointed the international professor of viola at the Zurich Hochschule der Kunst and recently founded the West Wycombe Chamber Music Festival, where he serves as artistic director.

Roxy Grove Hall is located inside Waco Hall at 624 Speight Ave. To purchase tickets, call the School of Music box office at 254-710-3571, or click HERE.
