Martin Museum of Art Presents Karl Umlauf Exhibition and Gallery Talk

WACO, Texas (Jan. 16, 2015) – The Martin Museum of Art will present works by Karl Umlauf, a Baylor University art professor and Artist-in-Residence, from Tuesday, Jan. 20, through Sunday, March 1.
Umlauf received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Austin and his Master of Fine Arts from Cornell University. He has been a faculty member of the department of art in the Baylor University College of Arts & Sciences since 1989. He will be retiring at the end of the spring semester.
“I’m honored to have the show at the Martin Museum of Art,” Umlauf said. “It’s a farewell show where the ranges of ideas I’ve worked with throughout my life are represented.”
Umlauf’s art has been heavily inspired by geophysical landscapes and industrial environments.
“Vertical landscapes provide a composition I can work with and investigate further,” Umlauf said. “I’m particularly inspired by the geophysical formations of canyon walls and fault zones. It’s structure that drives my creativity.”
During his extensive career, Umlauf traveled around Europe and the United States studying steel mills and other industrial locations. He hopes to convey these inspirations during his final show at Baylor University.
“I’ve enjoyed teaching, and I will miss my students and colleagues,” Umlauf said. “But I’m ready to spend more time in my studio and with my family.”
A reception will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29, in the Martin Museum of Art. Umlauf will discuss his work during a gallery talk at 6 p.m.
The Martin Museum of Art is located inside the Hooper Schaefer Fine Arts Center at 60 Baylor Ave.
Admission is free and open to the public.

The museum’s mission is one of education and service by bringing outstanding art exhibitions, speakers and guest artists to Baylor University and Central Texas. The museum serves as a valuable teaching tool for students and faculty. Exhibitions complement the courses of art history and studio art taught within Baylor’s department of art. The permanent collection consists of approximately 1,300 objects representing a variety of art that has been donated to or purchased by Baylor. The collection contains art by such well-known artists as Robert Rauschenberg, Kathe Kollwitz, Francisco de Goya, and Edouard-Leon Cortes.
