WACO, Texas (Dec. 28, 2014) -- Baylor University is mourning the passing of Dr. Randy Lofgren, B.M.Ed. '62, M.M. '70 and Ed.D. '74, retired associate vice president of constituent engagement, who died Dec. 26 at the age of 74.

A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Calvary Baptist Church, 1001 North 18th A Street in Waco, with Dr. Randall O'Brien officiating.

"Randy was the epitome of a Christian gentleman," said Tommye Lou Davis, chief of staff to the president and vice president for constituent engagement at Baylor. "He was a kind, caring man, who was always concerned about the well-being of others. In spite of a long battle with health-related issues, he never complained and was always positive and encouraging to all those around him.

"His servant's heart, commitment to his beloved Baylor and devotion to his family, friends and colleagues made him an inspirational leader and legendary member of the Baylor community. His positive attitude and gentle spirit will be greatly missed."

After graduating from Baylor, where he met and married his wife, Jeanine, Dr. Lofgren served as minister of music at Calvary Baptist Church and as choral director at Waco High School. In 1974, the Lofgren family moved to Jefferson City, Tennessee, where Randy was a part of the music faculty at Carson Newman College and created and directed the touring musical group, Something Special. He continued his career in music at Lakeside Baptist Church in Lakeland, Florida, First Baptist Church Duncanville, Texas, and later as choral director at Duncanville High School.

In 1988, Randy began his association with Baylor University as an administrator. He retired in May after 26 years of dedicated and passionate service to the University. As stated in his obituary, "His tireless effort, visionary spirit and unquenchable belief in the undeveloped potential of every individual defined his every endeavor. He is known to many as mentor, encourager, counselor, teacher and friend."

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jeanine Lofgren; daughter, Wendy Lofgren Smith, and husband, Mark, and their children, Jessica, Allison, Hannah and Lance; son, Kevin Lofgren, and wife, Shari, and their children, Finley and Owen; his loving sister, Karla, and her husband, Ed Davis; and nephews, Jonathan and Matt Davis and their families.
