January 29, 1997

WACO, Texas - Baylor University's Office of Public Relations has won a "Best of Texas" award by the Texas Public Relations Association (TPRA) for its work during Baylor's first dance, held April 18, 1996.
Baylor was cited for its planning, procedures, implementation and overall results of the event, the university's first-ever dance in the school's 151-year history. More than 10,000 persons attended the dance, including the largest media turnout in Baylor's history. Media representatives from throughout the country and several foreign nations covered the event.
The entry, titled "Miracle on Fifth Street: Baylor's First Dance," won a Silver Award, the highest award in the category it was entered. Winners will be presented awards Feb. 15 at the Wyndham Anatole Hotel in Dallas.
A record 220 entries in several categories were entered in the contest this year, according to Tony Turbeville, awards chairman of the TPRA. Some of the organizations entering included Motorola, Texaco, the Hyatt Regency, USAA, Houston Power and Lighting, DFW Airport Inc., Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau, San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau, the city of Houston, the city of Austin, Rice University, the University of North Texas, Baylor College of Medicine, the University of Texas Health Science Center, and numerous others, including most of the largest PR firms in Texas.
"The award is gratifying for two reasons," Keith Randall, director of public relations at Baylor, said. "First, we were judged by our peers, many of whom have spent up to 40 years in the PR field. And second, we were told we did everything right, that we showed the highest standards of professionalism and conduct.
"It's a real tribute to our entire office because everyone was involved. We have some very talented people working in Baylor PR."
