Baylor Model United Nations Team Earns Top Honor at National Conference

WACO, Texas (Dec. 11, 2014) – The Baylor Model United Nations Traveling Team recently represented the university with success as 14 students participated in the American Model United Nations International Conference.
The Baylor students represented Portugal at the conference, hosted in Chicago. They discussed issues including external debt sustainability and development, prevention of armed conflict, the illicit trade of small arms and light weapons, new and renewable sources of energy, violence against women and refugee protection from sexual violence.
For the first time in Baylor history, the team received the “Overall Best Delegation” award, the most prestigious honor given at the conference. Additionally, “Outstanding Delegation” awards were given to partner teams Carissa Carlson and Caleb Gunnels, both seniors, and Laura Beth Hooper (senior) and Marc Webb (sophomore).
“While the educational experience is to be valued above all, awards are considered a bonus,” said Rebecca Flavin, Ph.D., lecturer of political science in Baylor’s College of Arts & Sciences. “It is my pleasure to work with such an outstanding group of young men and women.”
Next semester, the team will travel to the Inaugural TexMUN conference hosted by Hardin Simmons University and the National Model United Nations Conference.
