Baylor Crew Will Host Head of the Brazos Regatta

WACO, Texas (Sept. 25, 2014) – The Baylor Rowing Club will host the Head of the Brazos regatta on Saturday, Sept. 27, marking the first time a race has ever been held on the Baylor campus. The regatta will feature as many as 200 boats from 20 rowing clubs around Texas.
“Baylor Crew last hosted the Head of the Brazos in 2005 at Brazos Park East,” said Gretchen Mikulich, Baylor Crew president.
This year’s races will start at 8:30 a.m. just above the Herring Bridge on Herring Avenue and end at the Crew Boathouse, located adjacent to the Ferrell Center. Spectators are invited to view the race at any point between the Herring Bridge and the La Salle Bridge, located near the Ferrell Center on La Salle Avenue.
Brad Holbrook, faculty sponsor for Baylor Crew, said he hopes the event will attract more Waco support for the sport.
“Crew represents Baylor on the water every day, and we would love for this event to help grow our club and help us compete at higher levels,” he said. “We hope this is just the first of many Waco rowing regattas. We want people to discover all our city has to offer.”
The 5,000-meter Head of the Brazos currently has registered more than 100 boats from 13 clubs and will feature 40 events in the junior, collegiate, open and master’s divisions.
Crew Vice President Abigail Combs said both the team and its advisors have put in much effort to make the event happen.
“It’ll be an incredibly rewarding experience to watch people who share a love for rowing engage in competition and celebrate victories together,” Combs said.
Baylor Crew is a co-ed, student-run club sport and is not affiliated with the NCAA or Baylor Athletics. The regatta will be sanctioned by the U.S. Rowing Association.
