WACO, Texas (May 2, 2014) – Several Baylor Bears from the many schools within Baylor University have much to celebrate after receiving prestigious national scholarships.
Jonathan Keim, a senior chemistry major, has been selected for the United States Fulbright Scholarship and will study to earn a master’s degree in synthetic organic chemistry at the University of Nottingham for the 2014-15 school year.
Pat Farmer, Ph.D., chair and professor in the department of chemistry, said he thinks Keim’s scholarship is “wonderful.”
“He’s not afraid of taking a big chance,” he said. “He applied all over the world, and I think his intelligence made him brave enough to do it. Not all students put themselves out there like that.”
Jesus Sotelo, a senior biology major, has been named a Rotary Global Grant Scholar and has plans to study for a master’s degree in public health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in London, England.
“I feel very blessed to have received this honor,” Sotelo said. “I applied and never anticipated actually getting the scholarship, so I was very ecstatic.”
Sotelo said he anticipates learning from the best in London.
“I look forward to working and learning under a world-class faculty at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine,” he said. “I hope to construct a research foundation for a career in medicine.”
Other Baylor student scholars include:
• Jeff Cross, a University Scholars major, was selected for a U.S. Student Fulbright to teach English in Germany next year.
