Concordia Composer Carl Schalk to Present at 28th Northcutt Lecture

WACO, Texas (March 28, 2013)—The 28th annual Northcutt Lecture will present a lecture by teacher, composer and author Carl Schalk, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of Music Emeritus at Concordia University, at 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 1, in Meadows Recital Hall, in the Glennis McCrary Music Building, 110 Baylor Ave.
Dr. Schalk began at Concordia University in 1965, where he was instrumental in creating the master of church music program. He is a Fellow of the Hymn Society of the United States and Canada and was made an honorary life member of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. He has published numerous choral compositions, and he has written over eighty hymn tunes and carols.
“Dr. Carl Schalk is one of the leading Lutheran scholars and composers of our time,” said David Music, professor of church music in Baylor’s Center for Christian Music Studies. “His choral music and hymn tunes are widely sung by churches of all denominations, and his writings have been foundational in our understanding of the music of the Lutheran church in the United States, as well as in other countries.”
The Northcutt Lecture in church music was established in 1985 by LeGrande and Cassandra Northcutt of Longview. It brings major scholars in the philosophy or practice of church music to Baylor's campus and is made possible by an endowment from LeGrande and Cassandra Northcutt of Longview, Texas.
“The generosity of Cassandra and LeGrande Northcutt in establishing the Northcutt Lecture Series at Baylor has been formative for generations of Baylor students,” said Randall Bradley, D.M.A., professor of church music and the Ben H. Williams Professor Music in Baylor’s Center for Christian Music Studies. “This series in church music is among the most prestigious in the field. Dr. Carl Schalk is yet another exemplary church music scholar in this esteemed list of presenters.”
