WACO, Texas (Sept. 10, 2013) - The Martin Museum of Art at Baylor University will present a solo exhibition of contemporary paintings, drawings, and collages by Robert Reed, professor of painting and printmaking at Yale University.
Reed's early work was influenced by the abstract, geometric works of New York artists in the 1960s and 1970s. He develops his bodies of work over long periods, including his latest body of work "Galactic Journal." This collection looks at the structure and mechanics of complex systems through precisionist techniques.
"My recent oil and mixed-media paintings are driven by process and improvisation," Reed said on his personal website. "The initial compositions are informed by photographs of cellular or satellite images chosen for their color and complexity, but I depart from the source of imagery as a painting takes on a life of its own."
Reed's work is displayed permanently in the Whitney Museum of American Art in Manhattan, the Yale University Art Gallery, the Bayly Art Museum at the University of Virginia, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C. and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
The Martin Museum of Art displays works chosen by faculty in the department of art in Baylor's College of Arts & Sciences that will most benefit students, said Karin A. Gilliam, director of Martin Museum.
"Galactic Journal" will be on display through Oct. 10. Reed will give a lecture at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, followed by a reception and gallery talk from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Both events are located at the museum at 60 Baylor Ave. and are free and open to the public.
