WACO, Texas (April 17, 2013)--A tradition that started in 1932 as a way to "bring smiles to the faces of students" by giving them a break from classes, dawns Baylor's campus once more.
Diadeloso, more commonly referred to as Dia, is an annual spring holiday enjoyed by Baylor students, faculty and staff. Re-organized by Baylor's Chamber of Commerce in 1935, "The Day of the Bear" features games, booths organized by various student organizations, and tournaments like tug-of-war, sand volleyball, ultimate Frisbee and basketball.
Diadeloso 2013 on Thursday, April 18, will include family-friendly entertainment for all ages. Events include a music festival, headlined by piano-based rock band "Five For Fighting," who will take the Fountain Mall stage at 8 p.m. Thursday.
Singer-songwriter John Ondrasik has spent the past decade writing deeply personal songs that include social messages, invoke the human spirit and make an emotional connection. This can be heard on the past four albums by Five For Fighting. Ondrasik's debut album, the critically acclaimed "Message for Albert," was released in 1997. Five For Fighting's breakthrough came in 2001 with the Grammy-nominated song "Superman" from the platinum certified "America Town." Already climbing the charts prior to September 11, "Superman" went on to have a life of his own, becoming a song of healing for the nation. In 2004, the band recorded the Platinum-certified album, "The Battle For Everything", which yielded the retrospective hit, "100 Years," a song that has become a part of the classic American songbook.
In addition to the music festival, Dia 2013 will feature professional performers, a dog show, a Guerilla Troupe performance, a student organization carnival and food trucks from Waco and Austin offering distinctive lunch and dinner options. Mikey the Capuchin Monkey will be making his Dia debut, dressed in his best Dia gear from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to pose for free pictures.
