WACO, Texas (April 12, 2013)-- According to the Centers for Disease Control, "about 1 in 88 children have been identified with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD)" and research shows a steady increase in its occurrence.

In hopes to expand services and resources to families in Central Texas who have children with Autism Spectrum Disorders or developmental disabilities, Baylor University's School of Education will host an inaugural gala benefiting the Baylor Autism Resource Center (BARC).

The gala, "Celebrating Exceptionalities" will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27 on the fifth floor of Baylor University's Cashion Academic Building, 1401 South Fourth St.

"In honor of National Autism Awareness month, we are excited to host the Inaugural Gala to increase awareness about autism and raise funds for the BARC," said Kristen Mainor, coordinator of the BARC.

Throughout the evening there will be a silent auction, music by The Morticians and dinner and dessert served by Festive Occasions. The BARC will honor First Lady Alice Starr and David Willis, J.D., for their contributions to the BARC.

Tickets for the event are $35 per seat or $250 for a table of eight guests. Attire is dressy casual.

For more information about tickets, donating items/services for the silent auction or have questions about sponsoring the event, contact Kristen Mainor at 254-710-6222 or Kristen_Mainor@baylor.edu.

The BARC was opened in January 2008 with a grant from the Waco Foundation and support from Baylor University. To learn more about the BARC and its programs and services, visit www.baylor.edu/soe/autism.
