Baylor's W.R. Poage Legislative Library Hosts Dialogue on 'Leadership and Lessons Learned from a Decade of Conflict' on April 11

Former Congressman Chet Edwards to moderate dialogue with retired Fort Hood commanding general
WACO, Texas (April 10, 2013)--Baylor University's W.R. Poage Legislative Library will host a special presentation on "Leadership & Lessons Learned From A Decade of Conflict" - featuring a dialogue with former U.S. Congressman Chet Edwards and retired Fort Hood and III Corps commander Lt. Gen. Paul E. Funk - at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 11, in Bennett Auditorium, 1420 S. Seventh St., on the Baylor campus. Lt. Gen. Pete Taylor, who was originally scheduled for the event, is recovering from a recent medical procedure and is unable to attend.
Edwards, who represented portions of North Texas, Central Texas and the Brazos Valley in Washington, D.C., from 1990-2011, now serves as The W.R. Poage Distinguished Chair for Public Service at Baylor. Serving in-residence two weeks per semester, Edwards provides public and classroom lectures, primarily in the areas of political science and economics, and leadership development training through various programs in the Division of Student Life. In addition, he hosts educational events in the nation's capital for Baylor students who participate in the university's longtime Washington Internship Program.
Gen. Taylor has more than 33 years of senior executive experience as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army, having led organizations at every level, culminating with his appointment as Commanding General of III Corps and Fort Hood. A graduate of numerous military leadership and development schools, Gen. Taylor received a bachelor of science in physical education from Middle Tennessee State University and a masters in political science from Kansas State University. Following his retirement from the U.S. Army in December, 1993, he has worked in banking, served as one of five congressionally appointed members on the Overseas Basing Commission and worked as a consultant with defense and other federal and state agencies. He was a founder and is the current Chairman of The Heart of Texas Defense Alliance and a founder and former Chairman of the Military Child Education Coalition, both of which serve the active military and their family members.
Gen. Funk is president and CEO of Mounted Warfare Foundation, aimed at providing unique educational experiences for soldiers and their families and for the civilian community across the nation. Funk holds a doctorate of education, a master's degree in psychological counseling and earned distinguished military graduate honors from Montana State University. He has held a number of command positions, from platoon through division, leading to his assignment as the Commanding General, III Corps and Fort Hood, including commanding the Army's 3rd Armored Division, Europe, from December 1990 to April 1991, when the Division distinguished itself as part of the VII Corps during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq. His awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross and Bronze Star, among many others.
A public reception will follow the event in the foyer of Bennett Auditorium.
