WACO, Texas (Feb. 13, 2013) - The 59th annual All University Sing competition, a Baylor University tradition that allows student organizations to showcase their musical talents in a Broadway-style production, will take the stage Feb. 14-17 and Feb. 22-23. Each performance will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Baylor's Waco Hall, 624 Speight Ave.
20 student groups will participate in Sing this year and have created original, seven-minute acts with a theme of their choice. While Baylor provides general guidelines, students are challenged with producing their own acts while taking into account factors such as vocal performance, choreography, backdrop, set design and theme development.
Sing acts are judged on level of creativity, entertainment value, choreography, musical quality and theme development. The judges, one of which has been "High School Musical" Star Corbin Bleu, come from all over the state of Texas and are selected based on their backgrounds in vocal performance, dance, or theater backgrounds.
Student organizations participating in this year's All University sing include: Alpha Tau Omega, Phi Kappa Chi, Pi Kappa Phi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Alpha Delta Pi, Delta Tau Delta, Phi Gamma Delta (Fiji) and Chi Omega, Zeta Tau Alpha, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Sing Alliance, Baylor Chamber of Commerce, Kappa Sigma, Kappa Omega Tau, Alpha Chi Omega, Kappa Chi Alpha and Beta Upsilon Chi (BYX), Delta Delta Delta, and Pi Beta Phi.
Sing started in 1953 as a choral competition. Each group stood on risers and would sing three to four musical selections, one of which had to be an official Baylor song. Over the years, students gradually incorporated costumes, choreography and skits into their acts, and by 1960, Sing had developed into the competition that it is today.
All University Sing tickets range in price from $14-22 for Baylor students, faculty and staff and $14-24 for the general public with a $5 service charge per ticket. Tickets to the performances are available by calling the Bill Daniel Student Center ticket office at 254-710-3210.
