Jay Mathis to Speak in Chapel-Forum Sept. 23

Jay Mathis, Republican candidate for U.S. Congress, will speak during Chapel-Forum at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, in Waco Hall at Baylor University.
Mathis graduated from Baylor in 1989 with a degree in speech. He is vice-president of the Mathis Company, specializing in estate planning, executive benefits and the design of disability and life insurance portfolios.
Mathis is opposing Democratic incumbent Chet Edwards for his Congressional seat. Mathis is a member of the National Association of Life Underwriters. In 1993, he was awarded the George Morris Memorial Scholarship by Prudential and also has received two national and four regional awards from them.
In community service capacities, he has chaired several committees for the Waco Chamber of Commerce and is a graduate of the Leadership Waco Foundation. He also is on the Board of Directors of the Waco Boys and Girls Club and was the co-founder and chairman of Concerned Citizens of Central Texas, later renamed Sentinel Communications.
He and his wife, Lydia, have two children, Jarrod, 5, and Lawrie, 3.
