WACO, Texas (Jan. 16, 2013) - Jesus was married. Fact? Or fiction? In recent news, an announcement of a newly-discovered early Christian papyrus fragment led people to believe Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene.
"The announcement created an immediate controversy, including disputes over the authenticity of the fragment. Some scholars argued that the papyrus fragment was in fact a forgery," said Mikeal Parsons, Ph.D., Macon Chair and professor of religion at Baylor.
"Dr. Mark Goodacre, a well-known blogger, was among the leading figures in keeping the public informed about the state of the debate."
Goodacre, Ph.D., associate professor in the department of religion at Duke University, will present "Was Jesus Married to Mary Magdalene?" Sponsored by Baylor's department of religion, the Office of the Vice Provost for Research, and Baylor University Press, the lecture will take place at 4 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 17 in the Miller Chapel of Tidwell Bible Building and is free of charge.
"We are delighted to welcome Dr. Mark Goodacre of Duke University to our campus," Parsons said.
"Our students will benefit enormously from his insights. He is a popular speaker on university campuses and has also served as a New Testament specialist on numerous radio broadcasts and television specials. I expect our students will be treated to a highly informative and entertaining presentation."
