Renowned Philosopher Speaks at Baylor University for the 2012 Roy B. Albaugh Lecture

WACO, Texas (Nov. 16, 2012) - One of the most respected minds in philosophy, Charles Taylor, Ph.D., will give a lecture to Baylor students as a guest of Phi Beta Kappa honor society and its Roy B. Albaugh Lecture Series. The lecture will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in the McLean Foyer of Meditation at Armstrong Browning Library, 710 Speight Ave.

Taylor is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. He has authored numerous articles and books that influence modern ideas of philosophy, including The Explanation of Behavior (1964) and The Ethics of Authenticity (1992). In recognition of his contributions to philosophy, Taylor received the 2007 Templeton Prize with a $1.5 million award and the 2008 Kyoto Prize, which is often referred to as the Japanese Nobel Prize.

"Students will benefit enormously from Taylor's visit and lecture. This is a man who has been called the greatest philosopher alive today," said Michael Foley, Ph.D., associate professor of patristics in the Honors College. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and Dr. Taylor will be speaking on a subject dear to Baylor: how to navigate the shifting tides of the 21st century as a person of religious faith. I have no doubt that his audience will be thinking about his lecture for days to come."

Phi Beta Kappa presents a public lecture by a distinguished scholar every year as part of the Roy B. Albaugh Phi Beta Kappa Lectureship. This series is made possible by an endowment established by Mrs. Oma Buchanan Albaugh in memory of her late husband, a Waco businessman and civic leader.

The lecture will be preceded by an opportunity for students to participate in an open discussion on faith and politics with Taylor and James D. Hunter, Distinguished Visiting Scholar of sociology in the College of Arts & Sciences at Baylor University. The discussion will take place at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in the Drawing Room of Memorial Residence Hall, 1425 S. Seventh St.
