Baylor Professor to Teach in Australia

July 10, 1996

Dr. Gayle Avant, associate professor of political science at Baylor University, will participate in an exchange with an Australian professor at the University of Ballarat in Australia during the 1996-97 academic year.
The Baylor-Ballarat exchange will send Avant to Australia and bring Dr. Peter Murphy to Baylor.
Murphy will teach several of Avant's courses in the fall including "American Constitutional Development" and assist in other political science courses. In the spring, he will teach an Australian/South Asian content course that has yet to be titled.
Avant will in turn take over Murphy's courses at Ballarat. He will teach three courses: "Modernity and its Discontents," "Latin American Politics" and a course focusing on the works of Charles Lindblom.
"This exchange, which does not require additional dollar outlays of either institution, stands to benefit both schools," Avant said. "Baylor students will have the opportunity to study with a lively and energetic political theorist who has a unique Australian perspective. Hopefully I will return refreshed, invigorated, and a better teacher in the fall of 1997."
The two professors will also trade homes. Avant will be joining his wife who is presently at another university in Melbourne working on post-doctoral research. Avant plans to travel and hopes to make professional contacts in Australia, Indonesia, and Malasia.
