Clean Airports Program to Be Initiated in Waco

WACO, Texas - Baylor University and Texas State Technical College (TSTC) will celebrate the designation of TSTC Airport in Waco as the nation's first "Clean Airport" during a ceremony at 9 a.m. Thursday, June 13, at TSTC airport.
Under the guidance of Dr. Max Shauck, director and chair of aviation sciences at Baylor, TSTC has been designated as the first "Clean Airport" by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), which recently announced its voluntary Clean Airports program, a spin-off of the nationwide Clean Cities program, in hopes of increasing the use of alternative fuel vehicles.
"For 15 years, Baylor University has been the leader in researching and testing alternative aviation fuels," said John Russell director of the Office of Alternative Fuels at DOE. "Therefore, the Department has appointed the Renewable Aviation Fuels Development Center (RAFDC) at Baylor to assume program responsibilities following initial designations."
Shauck recently received a Special Recognition Award during DOE's 1995 National Awards Program for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in honor of his work in developing and promoting ethanol as an aviation fuel.
The Clean Airports program targets small airports, aircraft owners and pilots promoting alternatives to aviation gasoline.
TSTC Airport has fulfilled all of the requirements necessary to be designated as a Clean Airport. An ethanol storage facility is currently located at TSTC airport.
Ultimately, the Clean Cities Program hopes to establish a comprehensive, all-inclusive alternative fuel network around the country, making it possible to travel to any location on any type of alternative fuel.
