Discovery Center to Host National Family Learning Day May 4

April 29, 1996

The Ollie Mae Moen Discovery Center, a division of the Baylor University Strecker Museum Complex, will serve as one of the hosts for the first National Family Learning Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at the Discovery Center located at 815 Columbus Ave.
The Family Learning Day is part of the National Learning Days Weekend held May 3-5 in which the importance of family participation in youth education will be highlighted across the country. The Discovery Center is one of only seven Texas sites hosting a learning day activity and one of 95 national sites.
The Discovery Center was chosen from numerous youth museums across Texas. The center offered education and entertainment to more than 16,000 children and 80 public and private schools in 1995, according to Jill Barrow, director of the Discovery Center. The center builds enthusiasm in students, she said.
"Visiting here gets children excited about learning," she said. "Learning can be fun. It is all hands-on participation. Children return to school eager to learn more."
National Learning Days is sponsored in a joint effort by the Chrysler Corp., Scholastic Publishers Inc., the American Federation of Teachers, and the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development.
The learning day is open to the public and free of charge. For more information contact Barrow at 757-0922.
