Biology to Give Awards, Host Davidson Lecture April 12

The Baylor University Department of Biology will holds its annual awards night and the Floyd and Lorene Davidson Lecture at 7 p.m. Friday, April 12, in Room 126 of the Sid Richardson Science Room.
Students who have received scholarships or other honors will be recognized as well as students who have completed biology research projects. In addition to the awards and honors, Dr. Frederick Gehlbach, professor emeritus of biology and environmental studies at Baylor, will present the Davidson Lecture.
The topic of Gehlbach's speech is "Why Research is Teaching." Gehlbach retired in 1995 from the Baylor faculty after more than 32 years of service. The Institute for Environmental Studies which is now a department at Baylor was co-founded by Gehlbach. He has written numerous articles on ecology and population studies and has authored two books, "Mountain Islands and Deserts Seas: A Natural History of the U.S.-Mexican Borderlands" and "The Eastern Screech-Owl: Life History, Ecology, and Behavior in the Suburbs and Countryside."
The lecture was endowed by Dr. Floyd and Lorene Davidson. The late Floyd Davidson was a former chair of the Baylor biology department and taught in the department for more than 30 years. He also served as director of the retired professor center from 1984 to 1990. Lorene remains active in bringing speakers to the campus each year.
