Dr. Charles Davis, Walter Plumhoff Professor of Accounting at Baylor University, and Dr. Elizabeth Davis, executive vice president and provost at Baylor, are the authors of a newly published textbook Managerial Accounting.
The textbook uses a novel approach to learning by integrating a running story about one hypothetical company and its supply chain partners throughout each chapter, providing a single context for students to learn decision-making skills. The company makes three simple products: baseball jerseys, baseball pants and award jackets. Students can easily picture these products and the steps required to go from raw fabric to a finished product.
Designed for today's "sound-byte" student, the text is arranged into short learning units that focus on one or two major concepts. Exercises at the end of each unit allow students to evaluate their understanding of the material before moving to the next unit. Decisions build from one unit to the next, and concepts build upon each other from simple to complex.
Decisions are framed around the business, not around the accounting department, allowing business students from all disciplines to learn how they might use managerial accounting tools and information to support their decision-making.
More than five years in development, the textbook has been classroom-tested and reviewed by more than 200 university and college professors and 500 students.
Charles Davis joined the Baylor faculty in 1991 and is chair of the department of accounting and business law. He received his bachelor of business administration degree in accounting from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., in 1981, his master's of business administration degree in accounting information systems from the University of Richmond in 1989 and his doctoral degree in accounting from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1991.
As executive vice president and provost, Elizabeth Davis is Baylor's chief academic officer and is responsible for overseeing all of the university's educational and research programs. She earned her bachelor of business administration degree in accounting from Baylor in 1984 and joined the Baylor faculty in 1992 after completing her doctoral degree in accounting at Duke University. The recipient of the Hankamer Teaching Excellence Award in 2003, Davis taught managerial accounting, with her research focusing on the effect of accounting information on judgment and decision making.
