Through a grant that Baylor received from the Texas Education Agency, Dr. Baxter Johns (Mathematics) and Dr. Trena Wilkerson (Curriculum and Instruction) have operated Project PRIME (Promoting Rigorous Instruction in Mathematics Education), a successful professional development program aimed at Waco ISD teachers of mathematics to help improve student achievement in mathematics.

This grant, which finished in the winter of 2007, covered expenses for Waco ISD 4th through 8th grade teachers to attend workshops and regional mathematics conferences throughout the year. During the summer of 2007, teachers attended a mathematics institute at Baylor. They were engaged in learning, just like they wanted their students to be.

"I finally understood the basis of calculus and differential equations...we love Dr. Johns, he has made it so simple," said Marian Wilson, a 4th grade teacher at J. H. Hines Elementary.

Bridget Law, a 5th grade teacher at J. H. Hines Elementary said "we have had a lot of Ďa ha' here" as she described the process of discovery.

For the educators involved in Project PRIME, it has been a beneficial experience to reinforce math concepts, but even better to witness teachers switching to the role of students for a change.
