James B. Mason
World's only swirl and block portrait mosaicist
These wood mosaic portraits are stylized composites by the world's inventor, James B. Mason of the swirl and block technique.
Some 250,000 pieces of separate cut wood inlay intersections were used in each mosaic portrait to fashion all of the presidents of the United States, or a total of 9,000,000 pieces to make all of these.
Mr. Mason during a lifetime has created less than 200 mosaics in his original creations, and these are considered rare and are appraised as collectors' items in critic's comments.
It takes both a craftsman and an artist to create one of these portraits.
