Moody Library Honors Baylor Benefactor

Jan. 22, 2013

An exhibit honoring the life of Joe L. Allbritton is currently on display in the foyer of the Moody Memorial Library through the Spring 2013 semester. The exhibit explores Allbritton's decades of service and leadership that greatly contributed to the growth of Baylor University.

Allbritton, who passed away on December 12, 2012, was a Baylor alumnus who enjoyed a successful career in the fields of real estate, banking and communications. Allbritton developed a successful media company in the Washington, D.C. area after purchasing the Washington Star. The company, Allbritton Communications, is now the parent company of the news website POLITICO. Allbritton also enjoyed success in the banking industry, serving as chairman of the prestigious and influential Riggs National Bank.

Throughout his prolific career, Allbritton remained deeply involved with Baylor, serving on the Board of Trustees from 1959 to 1968 and the Board of Regents from 1998 to 2001, where he oversaw major projects such as construction of the Moody Memorial Library. Allbritton was also very generous to Baylor, contributing funds for the Baylor President's home, endowed chairs in the Communication Studies Department and Baylor Law School, and the Allbritton Art Institute.

The exhibit is displayed in the foyer named after him and will serve as a reminder of the great contributions Allbritton made to the university.
