The Central Libraries Rare Books and Special Collections includes the Polk Rare Book Collection, the Sue Margaret Hughes Collection, the Jennings Collection and the Moody Special Collection. These and other library collections contain materials that are rare or very difficult to find, including:
- A first edition copy of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations
- Medieval music manuscripts
- A copy of the first childrens' book, Orbis Pictus
- A facsimile of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales
- A 1617 edition of Barker's Latin-English Bible
