Welcome to the Libraries Brochure
|
Welcome to the Baylor University Libraries! We hope to make your visit (whether virtual or in person) a pleasant one.
Services and Resources Available to Visitors
Books and other resources can be located using BearCat, Baylor's online catalog. Visitors are welcome to use the materials within the libraries in which they are housed. Texas residents with current TexShare cards may check out a limited number of items. TexShare cards must be acquired at your "home" library – see more information on the TexShare website. Limited check out privileges are also available to all Baylor alumni.
Note that some materials in our special collections and archives have restricted use and may require an appointment for use. Please contact staff members at the Armstrong Browning Library, Baylor Collections of Political Materials, or Texas Collection if you plan to conduct research with these types of materials.
Materials housed in Hughes Collection, Polk Rare Book Room, and Scholar's Collection have similar restrictions. Set up an appointment for these materials by email (rarecoll@baylor.edu) or by phone (254-710-2117).
Materials in the Morrison and O'Grady Shelving Facilities must be paged. These materials are retrieved twice daily, Monday - Friday. Call the Main Circulation Desk in Moody Library (254-710-6702) in advance of your visit to request Morrison or O'Grady items.
Electronic resources - Contracts restrict access for some electronic resources to current Baylor students, faculty, and staff, but many electronic resources are available to visitors physically present in the Baylor Libraries.
Internet access - The Baylor Libraries provide internet access through our VIA (Visitor Internet Access) service. A visitor must present a government-issued photo ID and complete a VIA usage agreement. Guests under 18 years must have an adult complete the form and take responsibility for use of the account. Please stop by one of the following locations for VIA service:
Another option for vistors to Waco is the Waco/McLennan County Public Library (directions).
The Baylor Libraries are NOT able to provide wireless access to visitors. Those with wireless laptops may want to use local businesses that offer free or fee wireless connections.
Photocopiers - Public photocopiers are available on every floor of Moody and Jones Libraries. The cost is $.10/copy. Please consult with the staff of the other campus libraries for photocopy policies and procedures.
Printing - Visitor printing is available at a pay-to-print kiosk on the first floor of Jones Library. Visitors using VIA internet access computers or the "libraryguest" login on other library computers can direct their print jobs to the "library guest" printer. Printing costs $.10/page. The kiosk accepts nickels, dimes, quarters, and $1 bills. Library staff are unable to break larger bills. For more information see the Visitor Printing instructions.
Note: Adobe Acrobat (used for reading and printing PDF documents) and many library databases have a "print" button within the program. Always use these special print buttons when available, rather than the internet browser's print function. Ask a library staff member if you have questions about printing.
Information for Teachers & School Groups
The Baylor Libraries welcome the opportunity to initiate young scholars into the world of academic research. Each year we host numerous high school and junior high school students working on history fair projects, term papers, and other research. Students are welcome to use the Baylor Libraries. We require that teachers who plan to bring a group to the libraries make prior arrangements with library staff. We strongly recommend that groups participate in a library instruction session and brief tour before beginning their work in the Central Libraries. Please complete the Library Instruction Request Form to arrange for your visit. Students are expected to abide by library policies during their visit. Call Ethel Walton (254-710-2349) or Janice O'Bryant (254-710-2319) if you have any questions about this service.
