Ernest Gaines, celebrated African-American author, was featured at the
Ferguson-Clark Author Lecture held Thursday, October 17, 2002. Mr. Gaines
wrote several fiction books including
The Autobiography of Miss Jane
Pittman,
A Long Day in November,
In My Father's House,
and
A Gathering of Old Men. His latest novel,
A Lesson Before
Dying won the 1993 National Book Critics Circle Award and was nominated
for a Pulitzer Prize. He has also been awarded a MacArthur Foundation grant,
for writings of "rare historical resonance."
Mr. Gaines brought tremendous insight, energy and passion to his lecture. It
was a celebration of life and learning having him in Waco and on the Baylor
campus.
