Best Practices for Online Proctoring & Test Integrity | Student Responsibilities for Online Proctored Tests
Baylor University faculty have the opportunity to utilize fully online-only test proctoring services to ensure integrity of online exams. These services give students the opportunity to take tests from any remote location using their own web cameras while being proctored or recorded in real-time. Each service offers a variety of test proctoring options ranging from lockdown browsers to live online proctoring. The following online test proctoring services are available to Baylor faculty and integrated into the Canvas learning management system (LMS).
LockDown Browser is a custom web browser that locks down the testing environment within the Canvas LMS. Students are unable to print, copy, or access other websites and applications while in the LMS. When an assessment is started, the student's web browser is locked until they submit that assessment for grading. LockDown Browser is available for both Windows and Mac. More information regarding the Respondus LockDown Browser can be found at http://www.baylor.edu/lib/factech/index.php?id=866596.
Monitor is a companion for LockDown Browser that enables assessment sessions to be recorded with a webcam. Students use their own computer and a webcam to record assessment sessions, all without leaving the Canvas LMS. When an assessment requires Respondus Monitor, students start the LockDown Browser application, log into the LMS, and complete a brief startup sequence to authenticate the student prior to the test/exam.
The student and the surrounding environment are recording during the entire test/exam. Instructors can quickly review details of the assessment, examine still images captured at random times during the assessment, and even watch the entire recorded video if necessary.
IMPORTANT: Baylor faculty who wish to use Respondus Monitor within a course are required to first view the information and training resources provided here:
Examity is a service that offers students a convenient and secure method to take proctored exams online from anywhere, any time of the day. Faculty and students can access Examity directly within Canvas without the need for a separate username and password. Faculty have the flexibility to select the level of online test security and to tailor the testing environment to meet desired exam specifications. Faculty are able to track when students take exams and can review video recordings from any test session up to one month after the exam session. Exam sessions can be audited with incident reports provided to the faculty.
ProctorU is a live online proctoring service for students to take exams from anywhere at any time using a webcam and a high-speed Internet connection. This service uses proctors who monitor students taking exams by observing the student live through a webcam, view the student's computer screen and test location in real time, and authenticating the student's identity using a multi-factor process.
