Acquisitions Student Assistant

Acquisitions Student Assistant

NO STUDY TIME ALLOWED

Essential Job Functions Include:

  • Checking in materials
  • Assisting in counting and dating recommendation forms
  • Preparing materials to be routed to various library departments
  • Preparing approval returns to vendor
  • Unpacking boxes of books and correlating the box contents with the order
  • Searching for material requests in the stacks
  • Searching order requests and gift books in various bibliographic tools
  • Helping to inventory gift collections
  • Helping prepare duplicate materials and gift items for distribution
  • Stamping materials with Baylor's ownership stamp and inserting theft-detection strips
  • Filing of various materials
  • Ability to work independently as well as with others with minimal supervision
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Requirements / Preferences:

  • Basic knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Accuracy in filing and detail oriented
  • Able to work at least 12 hours per week in 2 hour blocks Monday – Friday
  • Positive communication skills
  • Ability to lift and carry boxes weighing up to 30 pounds

Catalog Maintenance Student Position

Catalog Maintenance Student Position

Essential Job Functions Include:

  • Ability to file in alphabetical order
  • Ability to locate and retrieve books
  • Ability to barcode books correctly
  • Ability to load and maneuver heavy book trucks
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Circulation Desk - Days Student Assistant

Circulation Desk - Days Student Assistant

NO STUDY TIME ALLOWED

Your scheduled desk time will involve the following tasks:

  • Waiting on patrons at the Circulation Desk, including checking out books to patrons and providing directional information.
  • Answering the telephone and routing calls if asked to do so by a supervisor.
  • Processing books, which consists of:
    • Checking in books
    • Sensitizing books
    • Stripping books which have not been magnetically stripped
    • Placing books on the proper shelves in distribution
  • Straightening newspapers
  • Clearing/shelving
  • Relieve Moody Exit Desk staff members for breaks and lunch as necessary
  • Relieve Jones entrance desk staff members as necessary
  • Weekly searches for "claims returned" items
  • Weekly shelf clearing
  • Ability to work independently as well as with others with minimal direction
  • Students will not be allowed to use the internet for personal use without direct permission from their supervisor
  • Anything else requested of you by a supervisor.
The tasks above are listed in order of descending priority. Patrons who come to the Circulation Desk always have top priority, even above answering the telephone. The only exception to this is in the event of an emergency situation. Your shelf-reading will involve the following:
  • You will set up a schedule convenient to you with a supervisor during your first work week.
  • Shelf-reading hours will bring your total hours to an amount around twelve to fifteen hours.
See the shelf-reading manual for more information. You will be expected to respond to patrons at the desk, to the telephone, and to the processing of books as necessary without prompting from supervisors.
***Students will not be allowed to use the internet for personal use without direct permission from their supervisor.
Circulation Desk - Night Student Assistant

Circulation Desk - Night Student Assistant

NO STUDY TIME ALLOWED

Essential Job Functions include:

  • Assisting patrons at the Circulation Desk, including checking out books and providing directional information
  • Answering the telephone and routing calls if asked to do so by a supervisor
  • Processing books, which consists of:
    • Checking in books

Circulation - Periodicals Student Assistant

Essential Job Functions Include:

  • Cataloging the frequency of the use of periodicals
  • Re-shelving the materials
  • Reorganizing and straightening shelves and materials on the shelves
  • Shelving new bound and current materials
  • Assisting patrons with database searches
  • Training is provided for all above functions

Circulation Desk - Reserve Student Assistant

Essential Job Functions Include:

  • Photocopy and scan articles as needed
  • Retrieve requested books from regular stacks
  • Label all reserve books with proper labels
  • Search regular stacks for missing books
  • Assist patrons at Circulation desk with checking in / out books
  • Maintain the reserve shelves by keeping all books in call number order
  • Create files and file items properly
  • Do shelf reading
  • Occasionally fill in at the Exit Desk
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

  • Serve library clients
  • Assist with online catalog and database searches
  • Locating and retrieving materials

  • Answer and transfer phone calls to the various library departments

Interlibrary Loan Student Assistant

    Essential Job Functions Include:

    • Search for and retrieve requested items from the library stacks
    • Copy, package, and ship library materials to requesting libraries
    • Check-in, package, and return library materials to lending libraries
    • Retrieve mail from the mailroom and open the mail on an "as needed" basis
    • Open deliveries from couriers daily and route received materials appropriately
    • Assist with ILL statistical reporting as needed
    • Assist with ILS communications by answering the telephone and routing calls as needed
    • Assist with maintaining ILS supplies at operational levels by notifying ILL staff when the supplies run low
    • Ability to work independently as well as with others with minimal direction
    • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

    Requirements / Preferences:

Monographic Stacks Student Assistant

    Essential Job Functions Include:

    • Stacks area is responsible for the books that are on the shelves for public use
    • Assisting patrons to ensure they find the materials they need or properly directing them to other resources to find them (ie: reference desk)
    • Categorizing and shelving books that have been returned
    • Shelf reading – scanning shelves to ensure all books are in call number order
    • Create and revise location labels for stacks area as needed
