Biographical Chronology

1929 Born Robert Douglas Bullock in Hillsboro, Texas, to Thomas Austin Bullock and Ruth Mitchell Bullock.
1946 After his father died, Bob Bullock and his mother moved in with Bob's sister, Louisa, and her husband, Will Bond.
1947 Graduated from Hillsboro High School, Hillsboro, Texas.
1949 Received his Associate of Arts Degree from Hillsboro Junior College now Hill College), where he was co-captain of the football team.
1950 Married Amelia Hooks. Lindy was born in 1951, and Robert Douglas Jr. was born in 1959.
1951-1954 Served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
1957 Began first term in Texas House of Representatives. Re-elected in 1959. Served until Oct. 18, 1959.
1958 Received Bachelor of Arts Degree from Texas Tech University and Bachelor of Law Degree from Baylor School of Law.
1959 Resigned from legislature to practice law and work as a lobbyist
1961 Joined staff of Texas Auto Dealers Association.
1963-1965 Served on the Texas State Historical Survey Committee when John Connally was Governor.
1967-1968 Served as Assistant Attorney General.
1969-1971 Aide to Gov. Preston Smith.
1971-1972 Served as Secretary of State when Preston Smith was Governor.
1972 Underwent surgery to remove part of right lung. His nomination by Gov. Preston Smith to head the State Board of Insurance was rejected by the Texas Senate.
1975-1990 Elected to four terms as Comptroller of Public Accounts, a position he transformed into one of the most powerful in Texas.
1979 Suffered heart attack.
1981 Underwent treatment for alcoholism at Betty Ford Center.
1982 Announced he would run for governor, withdrew in 1984.
1985 Married Jan Felts Teague.
1991 Sworn in as 38th Lieutenant Governor when Ann Richards was Governor.
1994 Underwent heart bypass surgery.
1995 Sworn in for second four-year term when George W. Bush was Governor.
1997 Announces retirement from politics at end of current term.
1999 Last day as lieutenant governor was January 19. Passed away at home in Austin, Texas from heart failure, June 18. Buried at Texas State Cemetery, Austin, Texas, June 20.
