A Day in the Life of Steven Lopez

Hometown: Harlingen, Texas Undergrad: BA in Journalism from the University of Texas Starting Quarter: Fall

Free Time: "I like to go on day trips whether it be to one of Waco's quirky attractions like the Dr. Pepper Museum or to visit family and friends in Austin or Dallas. Waco is centrally located and allows for some great highway adventures, like a trip to Round Rock Doughnuts in Round Rock, Texas after it was featured on Man vs. Food."

Study Snack: Sour Skittles and Sour Patch Kids. "Cheez-its have also been found in my snack rotation during finals."

Pre-test Ritual: "I play the theme song to the Sopranos in the car before every exam."

Career Goals: Steven hopes to go into criminal defense. "The most challenging role a lawyer can take on is the champion of unpopular causes. Our system requires zealous representation for all who are accused of a crime. Furthermore, I choose to believe in the inherent goodness of people and that not all crimes are committed by bad people."

Thoughts on Waco: "I like the weather in Waco. It provides a nice sampling of the seasons. Hot enough in the summer and cold enough in the winter. I like being able to hit the pool in summer and make a snowball in winter. I also love that Waco is centrally located and makes weekend trips to Austin or Dallas easy. ."

Clerks or Internships: "Last summer, I interned at Texas RioGrande Legal Aid in San Antonio, Texas."

Why Baylor? THE EDUCATION. "I chose Baylor Law because I wanted the best practical legal education I could find. I wanted to be ready to practice from day one. Baylor's commitment to public service was also a big incentive for me. Every day we are reminded of our responsibility to give back to our community. Baylor seeks to produce well-rounded community leaders and not just lawyers. I have come to appreciate the rigorous academic schedule and standard that Baylor demands of us. During internships, I have seen first-hand how Baylor's high standards allow us to produce a high quality work product. The skills I have learned allow me to stand out and make a great impression with supervising attorneys and potential employers."
