Baylor Law alumna Lisa L. Havens, Scott & White Healthcare's director of Risk Management and senior vice president of Legal Counsel, has been named "Risk Manager of the Year" by Business Insurance magazine.
Havens was selected to receive the honor over other national and international risk management nominees including executives from Coca-Cola Co., Sanofi-Aventis, Bombardier, Inc., and Daniels Midland Co. All were selected by an independent panel of judges composed of former award winners, honorees and insurance industry executives.
"I'm truly honored and humbled to have received this award," said Havens. "But, my success lies in the fact that Scott & White's administrative team allowed me to build and maintain a risk management team who is so incredibly adept at what they do on a daily basis."
Havens has held her current position at Scott & White since December 1999. Prior to working for the health care system, she was a partner with Bowmer, Courtney, Burleson, Normand and Moore, an office of Naman, Howell, Smith & Lee, primarily practicing in civil litigation defense including medical malpractice and employment law.
Havens received a bachelor's degree in nursing from Texas Christian University in 1984, a master's degree in nursing with a focus as a clinical nurse specialist/education from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1989 and her J.D. in 1993. She is an adjunct assistant professor for Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine. Havens is also a past president of the Bell County Bar Association. In 2010, she received the Bell County Bar Association's Jim Bowmer Lawyer of the Year Award.
Havens also holds membership in The American Society for Health Risk Management and is a faculty member of the ASHRM Barton Modules.
Havens will receive her award at the Risk & Insurance Management Society Inc.'s annual conference and exhibition, which is being held May 1-5 in Vancouver. Profiles of the winners appear in the May 2 edition of Business Insurance.
