Baylor Law Students to Mulch Local Playground for Service Saturday

Feb. 25, 2011

by Brittany Hardy

Following the success Baylor Law School's inaugural Service Saturday, which was held in November 2010, it is time for another. From 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 26, students, faculty and staff from the law school will help mulch a playground at the Piper Childhood Development Center in downtown Waco.

"They need a lot of people to help," said Heather Creed, assistant dean of professional development and student relations.

Creed said last semester's Service Saturday, which involved work with Habitat for Humanity, went "really well" and about 25 people from the law school volunteered their time.

"Habitat was very appreciative," Creed said.

E-mails promoting Service Saturday have been sent out to the students, faculty and staff. As of now, about 15 people are planning to participate. One of those is 1L Alaina Smith.

"I think it is important to take part in activities that aren't self focused," she said.

Long term goals for Service Saturday include having one event per month and incorporating law-related services.

"It's hard to find law-related activities that lots of people can do. That's been our challenge. We're hoping to do what we can and add on," Creed said.
