WACO -- Melissa Jones had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead six players in double figures scoring, and second-ranked Baylor overcame a slow start to overwhelm Montana State 93-56 on Saturday.
Preseason All-American Brittney Griner added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Bears (2-0), while Brooklyn Pope chipped in 14 points and eight boards. Baylor also got 11 points from Kimetria Hayden, 11 from Ashley Field and 10 from Jordan Madden.
Katie Bussey and Sarah Balian led Montana State (0-2) with 12 points each, and Rachel Semansky had 11 points and eight rebounds.
The 6-foot-8 Griner came on strong after struggling in the first half, when she shot 1 of 7 against a Bobcat front line that had 6-4 center Chelsea Banis on the bench much of the way in foul trouble. Griner finished 3 of 10 from the field but was 9 of 10 from the foul line.
Griner also blocked five shots after getting shut out Friday against Florida International.
Playing their second game in less than 16 hours, the Lady Bears turned the ball over on their first two posessions, and Semansky scored back-to-back baskets in the lane.
Baylor coach Kim Mulkey responded by yanking all five starters barely a minute into the game and inserting the second unit, which produced a 10-4 run over the next 3½ minutes to give Baylor its first lead.
After five minutes on the bench, the starters returned and took control of the game with a 20-11 run over the next 5:15. Hayden led the charge with seven points, including a long 3-pointer from the left wing and a great finish on a baseline drive.
