Members of the Baylor Karate Club traveled to Ft. Worth Saturday to compete in their first tournament of 1997.
The nine-member team competed in the American Athletic Union (AAU) Dead of Winter Karate Tournament against approximately 100 competitors from the Southwestern AAU. The Baylor team enjoyed a successful trip, which included first place finishes in 12 events, and Top 4 finishes in 13 other events.
'I was real happy that everyone did well in at least one of their events,' said James Melton, coach of the Baylor Karate Club.
The Bears were led by Waco resident Kenny Chumak, who ended the day with first-place finishes in all four of his events.
With the success of the Bear's first tournament, Melton is confident about this year's team. The Bears will continue to compete in tournaments throughout the semester to qualify for the AAU national tournament, where the Baylor team has been successful in recent years.
'We have sent people to the national tournament each year for the past five or six years,' Melton said.
The first tournament to qualify for the AAU national tournament is March 18 in Ft. Worth.
