Steppin' Out, the twice-a-year service day for Baylor students, now has expanded to Dallas alumni, who are forming their own chapter.
Alumni interested in serving in Dallas will meet at 7 p.m. today in the Center for Community Cooperation to discuss the organization of this program.
'We are using free space provided by the CCC in Dallas,' said Carol Kent, Northeast Texas alumni coordinator and a 1975 Baylor graduate. 'This shows Baylor alums are working with the greater Dallas nonprofit service agencies. We see ourselves collaborating with other community service groups in the Dallas area.'
The response has Kent excited about the future of the program.
'Based upon the notice posted on the alumni page, we have had at least 25 alums contact me, and they have been coming from as far back as the class of 1958 up to the class of 2003,' Kent said.
Kristin Rider, a 1997 Baylor graduate, has been involved in service since she was a student at Baylor and a member of Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity.
'I can't wait,' Rider said. 'We are having a bigger turnout than expected. We are really excited that so many people are getting involved.'
Rider said they already have around 50 people who are committed to working, and they haven't even started the true membership drive.
'Right now I am just trying to find as many members that I can on my own,' Rider said. 'I am also getting in touch with volunteer opportunities in the community. We are probably going to be doing something where we can get in and get our hands dirty, whether it is painting or building school playgrounds. I am sure it will center around getting around and fixing something.'
Rider also said the upcoming meeting is going to be about planning, 'getting our scope together and basically seeing where we can best serve and getting people on a leadership team to help make this happen.'
'I would like to get as many people that are interested to go to Waco in November because we have several recent grads, and they would really be interested in that,' Rider said. 'For people that have been gone a while, it would be fun to get them involved again.'
Kent said they have been working with Jessica Truglio, the organizer for Baylor's Steppin' Out.
'We hope that some Dallas alumni will go down to Waco to help with Steppin' Out on Nov. 1.' Kent said. 'We have adopted the Baylor campus Steppin' Out logo to include Dallas alumni, so, now we have our own logo that is based on the original.'
Steppin' Out spread meetings also are planned for Steppin' Out in Houston and Fort Worth for later in the year.
'If anyone at Baylor has friends that have graduated in Houston or in Fort Worth, we would like to be in touch with them,' Kent said.
After teaching at Baylor for 11 years, Brenda Morris, director of the Baylor Network, said 12 people have said they are going to the Houston meeting.
'It is Oct. 2 and we are going to start our planning and have dessert,' Morris said. 'I think it is appropriate for alumni to continue that tradition and when we do we represent the best of the Baylor mission.'
