While college basketball teams play in the Final Four, Baylor students will take the court in Sigma Alpha Epsilon's Hoops For Homes tournament.
The four-on-four competition will begin at 8 a.m. April 5 at the First Baptist Church of Waco parking lot, located at 500 Webster Ave. The all-university event is held annually by SAE to raise money for mission trips to build homes. This year, SAE is sending members to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, during the summer.
'We're just trying to make a difference,' Peter Cavazos, a Dallas junior and SAE member, said.
Proceeds from the tournament go toward building materials and supplies for the mission trip.
'The tournament means a lot to our fraternity because last year we built a two-bedroom house for a homeless family, and we are hoping to help other families in the same way this year,' Adam McCown, an Arlington senior, said.
Cavazos said the purpose of the tournament also is to give students something fun to do.
'We really want people to be able to donate to a charity and also get something fun out of it,' Cavazos said.
The tournament features men's and women's leagues and a six-foot-and-under league. Students who wish to participate must enter as a team and pay a $50 entry fee.
Last year 32 teams competed in the event, and Cavazos said he expects just as many this year.
This year also will feature a dunk contest, which will be judged by Baylor basketball and football players. Those who can't dunk on a professional rim shouldn't worry since the tournament and dunk contest will be played using a nine-foot rim.
Cavazos said SAE is trying to get vendors such as Katie's Frozen Custard and Big Daddy's to be at the tournament to provide food and drinks for fans, as well as a disc jockey to entertain them.
'We are really trying to get a lot of students out to the event to watch if they aren't playing,' Cavazos said. 'We want all students to be able to be a part of it.'
Friday is the deadline to sign up to play in the tournament. Teams can sign up in the Bill Daniel Student Center, Penland Residence Hall or the McLane Student Life Center.
