I disagree with the editorial board's opinion that the Texas Tech Red Raiders were snubbed by the NCAA tournament committee. The bottom line is that the Raiders finished with a 6-10 conference record. I don't believe there is a team playing in the tournament right now with a losing conference record. Even if you include their performance in the conference tournament, Tech still finished with only an 8-11 record in conference play.
They did beat Oklahoma State, a team that finished the season 4-8 in their last 12 games, but also lost to Kansas State, Texas A&M and Baylor -- teams that finished at the bottom of the Big 12 standings. The board brings up the fact that two teams with lower RPIs than Tech, Oregon and NC State, were selected. However, both teams finished with winning conference records. Tech did not.
If Tech deserved consideration this season, then why didn't Baylor receive much attention two years ago? In 2001, Baylor finished with a 6-10 record in Big 12 play, beat two top-10 teams in Kansas and Iowa State and made it to the semifinals of the conference tournament.
Baylor did receive an NIT bid, but never was mentioned as an NCAA tournament bubble team and even had to play the NIT game on the road. The same standard should apply for both schools. Either both deserved consideration or neither did. Bobby Knight shouldn't make that much of a difference.
