A little taste of Monterrey with Rene's authentic fare

America is the land of opportunity, where people from other countries long to be and earn a living -- achieving the American dream.

This was the goal of the Hernandez family from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Three years ago they decided to begin a new life in Waco, bringing the authentic taste of Nuevo Leon to Central Texas.

On July 29, 2000, Rene's Mexican Restaurant opened at 1912 Speight Ave. right off Interstate 35.

As patrons walk into the medium-size diner it's like stepping into Mexico, greeted by the smiling personnel who then bring out the chips and the salsa (hot, since it's made with chile chipotle).

The smell of menudo, tacos al carbon and their panaderia (bakery) makes it seem like a restaurant in downtown Monterrey.

'All of food is made from scratch, all the way from the huevos con chorizo to empanadas de manzana,' Cristina Hernandez, owner, said.

For those that are tired of the Tex-Mex style of Mexican food, Rene's offers anything from eggs al la Mexicana, only for those who can handle spicy food, to the traditional chicken flauta.

Patrons also can get an oversized taquito with shredded chicken or meat that is deep-fried.

For those who want to get away from Cokes and teas, Rene's has 'Aguas Frescas.' Fresh lemonade, melon water and their famous Horchata are a few samples of Aguas Frescas. Horchata is a combination of cinnamon, vanilla, condensed milk and rice. According to Hernandez this is a favorite drink among the costumers.

For those from Mexico or familiar with the soft drink Jarritos, Rene's has them in all flavors.

'The secret to the home cooking taste is that we cook everything daily, we start really early in the morning, so everything is fresh every day,' Hernandez said.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner specials are available every day, and Lent specials are now available. Business hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Sundays 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Because of its great food and prices, Rene's receives three out of four paws.
