Softball team wins third tourney titleFeb. 27, 2001
The Baylor softball team set a school record with its 11th consecutive win Sunday, defeating the No. 20-ranked University of Oregon 3-0 to win the 24th-annual Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, N.M.
Baylor (19-4) broke the school record of 10 straight wins, set in 1983. The tournament win was also Baylor's third title in four tries this year.
Baylor beat the University of Houston 4-0 and Illinois State University 6-3 to start the tournament on Friday. The Lady Bears then exploded for 32 runs Saturday, whipping host New Mexico State University 23-9 before edging Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi 9-6. That set the rematch with the Ducks, which Baylor dispatched with for the second time in three meetings this season.
Catcher Ryan Stukel hit .421 in the tournament with a pair of home runs, five runs scored and nine RBI. In the circle, Joni Miller ran her record to 12-2 with four wins on the weekend.
Baylor next plays Wednesday for a twin bill against Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches.
