This Saturday, the Junior League of Waco will present Grammy-winner, Gladys Knight at the 42nd Annual Junior League of Waco Charity Ball. This event is the Junior League's largest fundraiser.

The Junior League, and Bedford booking agency Gary Osier Presents, are hosting Knight's appearance. Lisa Chenot and Chris McSwain are the co-chairwomen of this year's Charity Ball.

'We are really excited about this year's Charity Ball,' Chenot said. 'We expect to have a turnout of approximately 1,200 people who will help us raise around $160,000 for the Waco community.'

Tickets cost $200 per couple at the regular level, and $300, $400 and $500 per couple for the patron level.

The 2001 Charity Ball will be held at the Waco Convention Center.

The festivities will begin at 7 p.m. with an invitation-only cocktail party. The ball begins at 8 p.m., and Knight will go on at 9:45 that evening.

Also, there will be a casino and a silent auction. Allen Samuels Chevrolet will sponsor a swing-dance contest, and the winner will receive a $500 cash prize. The music for the contest will be provided by Hasket-Burleson, a local swing band.

'We would love to have Baylor students attend this fundraiser, and also to enter the swing dancing contest,' McSwain said.

Past entertainment for the Charity Ball has included Chubby Checker, The Commodores, and The Temptations.

The Junior League organizes many awareness and outreach programs for children and young adults in the community. They have initiated such projects as, Gain Awareness Through Education, which is a drug awareness program, and Moonlight Moves, an athletic program for area adolescents during the summer.

Also, they have a thrift store that sells furniture, clothing and toys. The Penny Pincher is located at 1412 Sunset Drive in Waco. The store is open for donations during business hours from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Tickets for the event are still on sale. Call the Junior League office at 753-5574 for more information.
