Bears look to rebound from 2 weekend losses in non-conference game
By JEFF PERCELL
Pitcher Derek Brehm is scheduled to get his third start of the season for the No. 23-ranked Baylor Bears as they take on Southwest Texas State University at 7 tonight at Baylor Ballpark.
Brehm looks to improve his 0-1 record after a 2-1 loss to California State University at Fullerton last Friday night. Despite the loss and a no decision in his first appearance against the University of Houston in the Astros College Classic, he posts only a 2.45 earned run average over 11 innings pitched.
'Derek obviously built on the first outing that he had against Houston down at Enron and this one was better,' head Coach Steve Smith said. 'I think there was a lot more pressure on him this time because the game was close.'
The Bears are coming off a weekend series with Cal State Fullerton, in which the Bears lost two of three games with the Titans.
Pitcher Steven White had an impressive performance against Cal State Fullerton, as he struck out five Titans in seven innings, while only giving up two hits and chalking up his second win of the season on Saturday.
The outing was good enough to earn him Phillips 66/Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors.
Second baseman Trevor Mote also did well, going 4 for 8 over the weekend and extending a hitting streak to seven games; he will attempt to extend his streak against the Bobcats.
Baylor last faced Southwest Texas State in the first round of the 2000 NCAA regional tournament in Waco; Bobcat starter Blake Williams shut the Bears out 6-0. However, Baylor won the three other meetings 8-0, 6-3 and 7-3 during the course of the season.
The Bears (4-3) are not necessarily on a revenge mission though, as they are preparing for conference action. Their first Big 12 Conference game is just over a week away.
'What we're doing right now is really just trying to improve ourselves, not so much with a particular opponent in mind, as much as just trying to continue to get ourselves game ready,' Smith said.
With the starting three pretty much set at White, Brehm and Josh Scott, Smith will look to refine his bullpen this week in intra-squad scrimmages, the game against Southwest Texas State, and in Baylor's coming weekend series against Nicholls State University.
'We've got a lot of pitchers who haven't thrown much,' Smith said.'I'm going to try to get the bullpen roles more determined.'
