YCT to tackle same-sex Defense of Marriage Act

This Valentine's Day, nothing says love like political activism.

On Wednesday, the Texas Christian Coalition will sponsor a Valentine's Day lobby in support of the Defense of Marriage Act. The event will be at the Doubletree Guest Suites in downtown Austin and begins at 9:30 a.m.

The Defense of Marriage Act is in response to the March 2000 decision to legalize same-sex marriages. Couples have been traveling to Vermont to become married and then returning to their home state to obtain marital benefits.

The Young Conservatives of Texas, which has a Baylor chapter, is helping to co-sponsor the event. Christopher Allen, the state chairman of YCT and a Baylor graduate, is working with the local chapter to raise support for the act.

'YCT aims to bring students into the political process,' Allen said. 'One way for us to do that is to introduce them to lobbying.'

Rene Rodriguez, a Midland sophomore and active member of the state chapter, supports the act.

'As a conservative and a Christian, I hold the sanctity of marriage to a higher value ... and anything that seeks to undermine the value of marriage should be stopped,' Rodriguez said.
