The Lady Bears volleyball team had an exciting weekend, gaining two conference victories as it swept the Kansas Jayhawks and Oklahoma Sooners.

Baylor fought hard to defeat Kansas 17-15, 18-16, 15-11 Friday night at the Ferrell Special Events Center. Elisha Polk dominated with 32 kills, earning Big 12 Conference Player of the Week honors. Polk, a junior, broke the Baylor record for career kills with 1,533. The previous record had been held by Heather Williams since 1992. Polk now holds every Baylor record for kills.

Junior Dana Atkinson contributed with 11 kills and 12 digs. Freshman Dana Chuha gave Baylor three straight points off of service aces in the second game.

The Lady Bears continued their winning ways, beating Oklahoma 15-9, 16-14, 15-11 Saturday night. The Bears had a .193 hitting percentage and 12 total team blocks. Seven of the team's blocks came from junior Kia Young who had five assisted blocks and two solo blocks. Polk continued to lead offensively with 18 kills and 45 total attempts, as the Bears improved their record to 13-13 overall and 6-7 in the Big 12.

Baylor will try to continue their winning streak as they face the Sam Houston State Kats at 6 tonight at the Ferrell Center. Sam Houston State is 12-17 overall and 9-10 in the Southland Conference after a 3-1 loss last weekend to Southeastern Louisiana. The Kats are lead by senior Tracie Benedele who has a total of 409 kills, 16 service aces and 27 solo blocks this season.

The Bears will have to battle the Kats without freshman Sunny Nicholas, who is out for the season with a stress fracture. Nicholas is one of only a few freshman to play in every Baylor match this season.
