Smith takes first
at Big 12 Championships
With a time of 17:17.90 in the 5,000-meter race, Baylor senior Sherri Smith led the pack Saturday at the Big 12 Cross Country Championships in Lincoln, Neb. Even with Smith's performance, the Bears fell short of their team goals, as the women's team placed fifth. Kansas State took first place on the women's side, ending the University of Colorado's string of two straight championships.
The men's team had a disappointing meet, as Baylor finished 11th in the 8,000-meter race. Josh Ward led Baylor runners with a time of 26:08.50, but no other Bears finished in the top 50.

New Mexico tourney
With a five-over-par score of 221, Baylor golfer Sorrel Richman led the Bears to a third-place finish at the Diet Coke-Roadrunner Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. Richman shot an even par 72 in the final round, which moved her into a tie for second place overall. Other key finishers for Baylor included Ali Brewer and Anna Lindeborg, who both finished tied for 18th with a 17-over-par score of 233.
The Bears' next action will be at the San Diego State University Fall Classic on Nov. 15.
knocks off Aggies
The Baylor volleyball team had an incredible showing in its win over No. 15 Texas A&M Friday night at the Ferrell Special Events Center. The Lady Bears played into overtime to beat the Aggies in five games, 16-14, 15-13, 5-15, 5-15, 20-18.
Elisha Polk helped lead the Bears to victory with 31 kills. Junior Kia Young contributed 16 kills for Baylor. Freshman Sunny Nicholas added 13 kills.
After their loss to Baylor, Texas A&M fell to 12-7, 5-6 in Big 12 play.
The Lady Bears then faced the University of Texas Saturday night in Austin. This time, the Bears found themselves on the losing end of a four-game match. Despite 18 kills by Polk and 12 kills by Young, UT defeated Baylor 15-2, 10-15, 15-4 and15-5. The Longhorns now stand at 17-3, 11-1 in conference play. Baylor is 11-13 on the season and 4-8 in Big 12 play.
Men's tennis loses
to Notre Dame
At the Eck Tennis Pavilion in South Bend, Ind, the Baylor men's tennis team barely lost a Friday evening match to the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Despite winning the No. 2,3 and 4 singles, Baylor was unable to win a fourth match and was narrowly defeated, 4-3.
For the Bears, Pawel Gajdik defeated Brian Patterson of Notre Dame (7-6, 6-1) in the No. 2 singles match. The other Baylor singles victories came from Jorge Aldrete defeating Andy Warford (7-5, 6-2) and Csonger Bibza narrowly edging the Irish's Casey Smith (6-3, 6-7, 6-1).
Baylor won one of three in doubles play, with the only victory coming from David Hodge and Mark Williams' 8-4 defeat of Notre Dame's Aaron Talarico and Andy Warford.
