A University student won a design contest and is receiving a 1997 Dodge Neon from the Chrysler Corporation.

Today, Ryan Martin, a Corpus Christi freshman, will travel to Detroit to receive recognition for his award. Martin entered the competition last fall when Chrysler visited the University.

'It was a total surprise when I won,' Martin said.

The company set up a Dodge Neon in Fountain Mall and passed out paper with the outline of a car for students to fill in with a design.

'I decided I would enter and picked it up on the way home from class,' Martin said. 'I brought it back at 5 p.m. and the lady said she had just sealed the envelope, but she would try to get it in for me.'

From the entries, one student was selected from each of 25 universities. Chrysler sent them a model car to decorate.

'They sent me a model car to design,' Martin said. 'I was in an art class at the time and consulted one of my teachers as to what kind of paint to use. I put more work into painting the model than I did the original paper.'

When Martin returns from Detroit, he will receive his car from a local dealer.

The Chrysler Corporation could not be reached for comment.
