The Baylor women's tennis team had a streak of five wins in a row going into the match against No. 5 University of Texas, but the Bears were beaten 63 Thursday, dropping their record to 83 on the season.
The Bears struggled through the six singles matches, managing to win only one. Vanessa Abel, a Tucson, Ariz., freshman, posted the, 63, 63, win over Farley Taylor, who is an All-American. Taylor has been ranked in the top 10 in the country.
'I was really relaxed today,' Abel said. 'I guess being only a freshman, I didn't get nervous over playing No. 5 Texas.'
Abel teamed up with Carolyn McGrath, a Cornwall, N.Y., senior, to beat the University of Texas duo of Sureephong and Berendt. Despite losing three match points with the score 76 in Baylor's favor, the combination came back to win the match 98. The match was won in a tie-break 72.
'I've come really close to winning my matches against Texas, but I never could do it,' McGrath said. 'I finally did it.'
The other Baylor doubles win came in the combination of Lauren Spears, a Chillicothe sophomore, and Barbara Navarro, a recent transfer from Alicante, Spain. The team aced their competition, 80.
'Texas is a strong team and they are ranked accordingly, but I can't say enough about our team,' head tennis coach Dave Luedtke said. 'We can pull a lot of momentum out of this match, especially as well as our doubles teams played.'
The Bears host the Kansas State University team at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Streich Tennis Courts preceding the men's tennis match against Oklahoma State University that will begin at 1:30 p.m.
